FAQs for Thermographic Drone Inspections

Can I see what my drone sees during flight?
There are different configurations. Some configurations provide transmission of infrared data to the ground in real time on the monitor. There is no risk of losing the data as they will be recorded on storage devices.
Can thermal imaging determine water leaks?
Yes. Thermal imaging can detect water leaks, water intrusion, and plumbing leaks. This is because the thermal conductivity of water affects heat dispersion, and accordingly alters the infrared emissivity of the material, which in the thermogram becomes cooler. Difference between radiometric and non-radiometric cameras
The non-radiometric thermal imagers mainly provide a thermal image showing the temperature differences, but it is not possible to measure the absolute value of the temperature on that image.
The radiometric imagers allow you to measure the absolute temperature value of each point in the image.
How are the data analyzed for Matrice 100 IR and Phantom 336-IR?
For the FLIR Thermal TAU2 radiometric with Capture cameras there is the Thermoviewer software which exports the IR information to formats compatible with Flir Tools, the software forprocessing the infrared data and report creation.
How does thermal imaging work?

Thermal imaging cameras detect heat, whereas normal digital cameras have sensors which detect light. On a thermal imaging camera, a special lens focuses on the heat, also known as infrared, given off by an object onto a detector which is sensitive to heat. Therefore thermal imaging will work both in daylight as well as in complete darkness as it is unaffected by light.

Since the camera doesn’t have screen, where are the data stored ?
The thermal data are saved on storage devices (USB drive or Micro SD) and transferred to the PC by connecting these devices.
Which camera should I choose?
FLIR cameras have high performance. The choice of the camera varies according to specific requirements. There are cameras with different temperature ranges and resolution.
For identification of difference of temperatures without the exact measurement, the FLIR Vue is a valid solution.
For accurate measurements of the temperature of individual points FLIR TAU series 2 cameras are recommended.
Which is more suitable to detect any malfunctioning panel on a large scale photovoltaic power plant: Matrice 100 or Pahantom 336?
The choice of the solution varies depending on the approach used. With the Phantom 336-IR it is possible to fly for a first inspection to identify hotspots of the whole extension of the photovoltaic field. Then we proceed to an accurate analysis from the ground. With the Matrice 100 thanks to the double battery with greater flight range it is easier to proceed with only one flight at a preliminary inspection and then follow with careful verification of the areas of greater interest.
